When we look at the ministry of Jesus and how He taught, we see that one of the most effective tools He used was the parable. A parable is a fictional story that has spiritual truth. Jesus used this tool very effectively. We know this because as He spoke those around him, especially the Pharisees, knew what He was talking about and usually got the point.
In Matthew, we see a lot of parables as Jesus was heading towards His crucifixion. One of them spoke on the topic of those who would reject Jesus and His salvation. This is known as the parable of the wedding feast. In this illustration, Jesus speaks of a great feast provided by a king in honor of his son’s wedding. This would be a big deal if you were invited to such an event. But what we see is that many chose not to attend. They all had better things to do with their lives. It was all about their business, about their agenda and they didn’t care enough about the king to honor his invitation. Matthew 22:11-14, “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”
The king was frustrated with their lack of interest in something that was such a blessing to be a part of. So, the king had his servants go out and invite anyone who would be willing to come. Now, if you are going to be a part of such an event you should dress accordingly. As the king went through the banquet hall, he saw an individual who was not dressed as he should be. The king had him thrown out. What is the point of this parable?
The wedding feast is a call for people to come to be a part of the kingdom of God. This invitation began with the Jewish nation, and their rejection of Christ then opened the doors to the Gentiles. Yet, this parable goes a little further for the church. Many will come to church to be a part of a network of people to help with business opportunities or political aspirations. They enjoy the musical entertainment that the church can provide. You know, a concert. Sadly though, many come and participate in church, but spiritually they are not the church. The Bible says that if we are in Christ we are robed in His righteousness. This means we are now dressed spiritually correct. Many claim to be Christians, but the Lord looks and sees that they are not clothed in the Lord’s righteousness, therefore they do not belong. They then will be rejected on the day of judgment.
The other point I would challenge us all with is whether we are so wrapped up in our own lives, and our agenda that we will not participate in the things we have been given to further the Lord’s kingdom here on earth. We must remember that we are called to a greater purpose than our own.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, I’m sure we will all dress appropriately. I pray that you will be wearing the proper clothing when the Lord calls us to the Great banquet when we finally reach the Kingdom of our King Jesus.
