The word Lord can mean many things to different people. For the Jews, the term could simply mean sir. Normally, the term lord refers to that which has preeminence in one’s life. For example, if our job or career takes up all our waking moments and is what drives our lives, it has become lord. For some it’s our spouses, children, or grandchildren, even sports can consume our thoughts and passions.

In Luke chapter 6:46, Jesus asks this very profound question, “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” If we claim to be true followers of Jesus and we call Him Lord over our lives, then why don’t we do what He says? Why do people have to be begged to serve in any kind of ministry? Why do people have to constantly be challenged to be a witness for Christ or the very least invite someone to a worship service so that they may hear the gospel?

I suppose it would be a good time to reflect on two questions. 1) Who, or what is lord over our lives? What has and keeps our focus, what drives our lives? 2) How can we say that we have let Jesus be the Lord of our lives? Jesus answers that question with an example of what type of foundation someone would build a house on.  There is one who digs deep and lays their foundation upon the rock. When the storms and floods of life come, their house will stand. Jesus is that rock. We build our lives upon who Jesus is, what He says, and how He directs our lives. If we do that, then we can say with great sincerity Jesus is Lord.

Then some build their lives upon no foundation at all. They allow the things of this world to have a great and powerful influence on their lives. The problem is that when the storms and floods of life come, everything around them will collapse. Jesus is not on some kind of authority power trip. He knows that He is the only hope we have in this world.

You see, I want to call the Lord the One who can calm the storms with just a word. I want to call Lord the One who has defeated death and the grave. I want to call Lord the One who gave His life for me. I want to call Lord the One who sits at the right hand of the Father on my behalf.

Nothing else in the world has the power to save, only Jesus. Why wouldn’t we want Him to be Lord? When you think about it, He doesn’t ask for much in return, just our love, faithfulness, and obedience. I know that I failed that many times, yet He still loves me.

My desire is for everyone to know Jesus as I have come to know Him. This could be the greatest year of our lives if we allow Jesus to be the Lord. He is so deserving of that title.
