As we read the Bible there is so much information in the books that it can be overwhelming. Sometimes you read scripture and walk away thinking, “I have no idea what that was saying.” It can sometimes be so over our heads that we may be tempted to stop reading the Bible altogether. We all know that is not a good decision.

I would then challenge us to go back to the Gospels. Why? I’m so glad you asked. The word gospel means good news. The gospels are where we are reminded of the most amazing love story ever written. There is another powerful reason that everyone, and I mean everyone, should read the gospels. The Apostle John tells us why in his gospel chapter 20, verses 30-31, “Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”

We read the gospels because we see the evidence of God’s love for mankind. The gospel shows us the evidence of who Jesus is and what He came to do. We also see, through Christ, who God is. All of this is to bring us to the point of believing in who Jesus is, and in believing we will receive eternal life. This is why John wrote his gospel so that all who read it could decide for themselves what to do with Jesus.

Now, there is another reason we need to read the gospels often. In them, we find our redemption. We see how God loves, and how Jesus treated the lost and the hurting, and we then have an example to follow.

It goes even further than that. We all realize that many people will never pick up the Bible and read it for themselves. So how will they come to a point of belief? How will they come to salvation if they do not read for themselves all that Jesus has done for them? That my friend is where we become the Bible for them. We show and tell what Jesus has done for us and the miracles He has performed in us.

People can take a book and cast it aside, but it will be difficult to watch and listen to your testimony and slide it into some bookcase and forget it. Family, we read the gospels, but more importantly we live the gospel because the gospel is the only place people will find the words of life. If they refuse to read it, let them watch it in how we live and hear it in how we speak.
